Mathematics
Through the study of mathematics, we aim for all of our students to acquire fundamental mathematical knowledge while developing logical processing skills, problem solving skills and other skills, such as financial literacy, which are essential for their personal and professional lives.
Our students will learn a range of mathematical vocabulary and notation and apply it to communicate with increased precision. Our intention is for all students to be able to listen to others, question information, share their own ideas and make and communicate logical arguments and conclusions. We strive to provide opportunities for intellectual growth and development by stretching our curriculum to include additional qualifications such as further maths, statistics GCSE and participating in the UK Maths Challenge. Our school ethos is demonstrated in lessons where all students are taught aspirationally and with mutual respect and care.
While enjoying the challenge of mathematics, all students will know the importance of these skills and the impact that GCSE success will have on their post-16 options.
KEY STAGE 3
In years 7, 8 and 9, students follow a three-year key stage 3 mathematics programme of study, based on the national curriculum, which prepares them for their GCSEs beginning in year 10. Formal, termly assessments help inform group changes throughout the year. Our more able students have the opportunity to compete in the national UK Maths Challenge, and regional mathematics competitions.
KEY STAGE 4
Students follow the AQA GCSE course at either the Higher tier (grades 5-9) or Foundation tier (grades 1-5) with the intention that all students will be entered for GCSE mathematics at the end of Y11. Students are set according to ability and are assessed throughout the year in order to monitor their progress. It is essential that every student prepares well for their assessments as this information is used to ensure that they are entered at the appropriate tier for their final examinations.
Towards the end of Y11, time is allocated to examination preparation. Students are given targeted revision homework to support them in achieving their full potential.
